The Art and Science of Mom

My mission is helping families find calm in the chaos of modern parenting. I am an academic, practicing therapist, and mother of 3. I deep dive complex parenting topics so you don't have to! I share true confessions to be real about this parenting gig. I do it all to help us all be grounded and more in tune with our instincts. My book, Autonomy-Supportive Parenting: Reduce Parental Burnout and Raise Competent, Confident Children, is now available on Amazon or Bookshop!

Parenting Support Without Judgment

The strongest and most confident of us will be humbled by the major stress points of parenting, from breastfeeding, to the precious and precarious sleep, daycare decisions, homework, cell phones, and to how to manage our own stress in the craziness of it all. Sometimes all of us parents need to hear that we are actually doing okay, that our mistakes are normal, and that our children will really be fine.

I have been both child psychologist and Mom for the past thirteen years, and I have personally and professionally experienced the challenges our information age presents to parenting with confidence. Although it seems like greater access to information would ease the stress of parenting, the opposite is true.

Despite what I bring professionally to motherhood, I still struggle with the same self-doubt and insecurity as most parents (see my True Mom Confessions). I am here to add an honest voice of support, based on what we know both from science and from instinct (that's where The Art & Science Of part comes in).

This website offers a parenting "partner" rather than a parenting "expert." I write about the research behind the most basic, yet mystifying, parenting topics, and I blog about the day-to-day experience of blending instinct with science in this wide, weird world of parenting.

โ€œAutonomy-Supportive Parenting: Reduce Parental Burnout and Raise Competent, Confident Childrenโ€

Iโ€™m excited to announce my first book hit shelves September 5, 2023! You can order now on Amazon or Bookshop. This book gives parents a roadmap to move away from hovering and over-helping (burning us out and undermining our kidsโ€™ competence and confidence) to raising self-sufficient children ready for the world. We can all shift from โ€œfull-serviceโ€ to โ€œself-serviceโ€ in our homes by focusing on three fundamental human needs: autonomy, relatedness, and competence. I will tell you how! "Let's dig into the reality of parenting ... and remind each other that we are all doing okay by our children because we are doing our best. Not only does science say so, but if we pay attention to the art of motherhood, our instincts tell us so too."

"How often have we heard -- and said -- 'I'm such a terrible mother.' I would like to change that sentiment to a kinder, 'I'm a good-enough mother.' "

"We need to change the universe of modern parenting guidance to be more compassionate and realistic, supporting us so we can more fully support our children."
